renewable energy sources – AGORES HOME PAGE- A Global Overview of Renewable Energy Sources

30 September, 2011

We often hear that we are in danger of running out of non-renewable resources. But, what exactly is a non-renewable resource?

Stated simply it is a resource which cannot be replenished at a rate equal to or greater than it is consumed. For example, oil is a non-renewable resource. There is only so much oil in the ground. Every year the world consumes thirty-one billion barrels of oil. At some point, if we continue to use oil at the same rate, we will be using more than we are extracting from the ground.

On the other hand, if we were able to produce cars that run 100% on solar power, we would be using a renewable resource – the sun. It would be renewable because the sun produces so much energy that we would be in no danger of depleting it.

Non renewable energy resources primarily come from fossil fuels. These are fuels that had their genesis millions of years ago as buried organisms decomposed to form the oil, coal, and natural gas that we are able to take advantage of today. These fossil fuels basically provide the energy that drives the economy of the U.S.

Currently, at least eighty percent of all the energy that we, as a nation, use comes from fossil fuels. Our military experts have long been aware of how our reliance on this form of energy is putting our country at risk. And just recently, they have released documents that warn of the effects that global warming will have on our national security.

The biggest reason that they are concerned is that these fossil based fuels that we depend on so heavily is the cause for the huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions that are polluted into the air each year. The most dangerous of these greenhouse gases is carbon dioxide, mainly because there is so much of it produced each day.

If you talk to scientists, it is beyond dispute that greenhouse gases are responsible for global warming. The polar ice caps that have existed since man has been keeping records have begun to melt. And the result has already begun to cause the sea levels to rise in areas around the world. Already millions have been displaced from their homelands with many millions more to be displaced in the future.

At some point the tipping point will be reached and it will be too late to make effective corrections to the problems that man has caused. No one knows exactly when this tipping point will occur. But nearly all climate scientists agree that it is not that far away.

5 Renewable Energy Sources For Buildings Which Property Developers Will Soon Need

For some years now planning and development agencies in most developed countries have been progressively increasing the energy efficiency requirements for all new property. The main gains from energy efficiency from doing this, while keeping costs at a realistic level have now been won. So, these authorities are adding a requirement that part of the remaining energy used by the building will be produced by energy generation on-site.

This year London has decided to require its developers to do just that. So, if you are a property developer this means that there could not be a better time to be reading this article.

The list below contains the energy technologies which we think are the front runners for the systems which will be built into buildings so that they can generate a proportion of heir own power sustainably on-site.

Solar Power

The solar power cell has been around for some time, but will be increasingly used on our city buildings.

Mini Wind-Turbines

A windmill can only work where there is enough wind, but where there is the wind, then these can be very cost effective, and would probably cost less than solar panels at current prices for photovoltaic panels.

Energy from Waste

Waste can be burnt, and the heat used to generate electricity and heat to warm the building in winter, and some building occupants using a lot of packaging will do well out of this (eg Supermarkets).

Exchange the Discarded Heat Otherwise Lost

All this means is the cold air being brought into the building is first allowed to pass over radiator through which the outgoing warm air is passing. The incoming air is warmed before it enters the heating system saving a great deal of energy. The question arises whether this option is actually a renewable energy technology as such. Nevertheless, it is a powerful technique to use.

For those properties which discharge a lot of warm water, as do hotels from baths and showers, there is also heat exchange potential for the liquid discharges.

Free Energy from Water Distribution System Pressure Reduction Points

We are unable to explain much more than is indicated by the header to this paragraph, because the explanation is technically quite difficult to appreciate. However, this solution to a need for renewable energy relies on the insertion of a small electric generator into a water main at the right (pressure reduction valve point). This enables energy which was originally from the systems pumping power to be released as electricity again.

So there it is. Our description, in short, of the 5 techniques we think best for the provision of the required percentage of renewable energy to offset the energy demands of new property developments, energy demands which would otherwise have to be met by the use fossil fuel.

What is the cheapest energy source today?

I was under the impression that Nuclear power was the cheapest, but I get a wide range of numbers with each website I look up, especially if they are specifically trying to push a certain energy source. How does nuclear compare to solar thermal?
