An Introduction To 4 Sources Of Alternative Energy.

Alternative or clean energy seems to be a hot topic nowadays. Everyone is talking about going “Green”. Let’s take a look at four sources of alternative energy and how each one works.

The first one is Solar Power.
Solar power utilizes shiny, mirrored panels, which capture the suns rays and using several different methods, ultimately converts it into electricity . Solar energy makes no pollution, since it’s source comes completely from the sun’s rays. However, a lot of of work still needs to be done in order for us to economically capture the sun’s energy. We need to develop dependable, long lasting storage batteries that can be used in the evenings and on overcast days.

Next on the list would be Wind Power.
Wind energy is quickly becoming the most-invested-in (by private investors and governments together) alternative energy source for now. The enormous arrays of three-bladed windmills are being used everywhere as wind farms, to capture the motion of the wind and then convert it’s kinetic energy into mechanical or electrical energy. Of course, there is nothing new about the concept of a windmill for capturing energy. Today’s wind turbines are just more modern variations on the old theme. There is one drawback to wind energy though…What happens when there is no wind? The electric company will still be there to help you out, for a price of course. So as you can see, Wind Energy is not the perfect solution.

Third is Hydro-Electric Power.
Hydroelectric energy is accessible as a form of alternative energy, and it can create a great deal of power. Hydro-Electric energy simply uses water, flowing downhill, to turn turbines which then makes electrical energy. Needless to say, water is practically everywhere so finding sources for driving hydroelectric turbines isn’t really much of a problem. Hydro-Electricity, however, can be complex and expensive to produce. Dams are often built to control the water flow sufficiently enough to produce the needed power. Building a dam to store and control water’s potential and kinetic energy is a great deal of work and operating one is time consuming and expensive as well. Of course, a dam is not always the way to go if you’re not trying to supply the electrical needs of a whole community or other very crowded area. There are small run of the mill hydroelectric converters which are good for supplying neighborhoods or an individual office or home.

And finally we have Geothermal Power.
Probably the most underestimated and under-appreciated forms of alternative energy is geothermal energy, which is nothing more than the naturally-occurring energy created by the heating of artesian waters just below the earth’s crust. This heat is transferred into the water from the earth’s inner molten core. The water is drawn up by various methods. The purpose of drawing up the hot water is for the collecting of the steam which is then used to turn the turbines which produces electricity. The country of Iceland, which is a volcanic island, gets approximately 24.5 % of its power from geothermal energy. They also get 75.4% from Hydro-Electric power and only 0.1% from fossil fuels. Iceland is richer in hot springs and geothermal activity than any other country in the world. So as you can see, the possibilities do exist.

O.K,. So that pretty much sums it up …
Although there are several other types of alternative energy currently being looked at, these are 4 of the top sources being considered. To convert from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy may seem expensive at first, but in the long run it will be less expensive and we’ll never run out. We all know how expensive oil is getting and the less of it there is, the more expensive it will get. The time to make our move is now!

10 Alternate Energy Sources To Live Well With Global Warming.

Feeling hot under the collar?

Glaciers and polar ice are melting, ocean levels are rising, hot, dry weather, huge forest fires, water restrictions, crop failures…

You name it, if these don’t feature in your life yet, they soon will. Global warming and climate change are facts of life now, according to the International Panel on Climate Change, and many scientists.

Huge problems beyond our control!

But are you hot under the collar?

If you’re not, you probably live in a city where half of the Earth’s citizens live now and take much for granted. Because in city livin
1000
g we are far removed from natural processes that deliver our food, clothing and energy.

Does your child even know that milk comes from a cow – or a soya bean if you’re that way inclined – and not from a milk carton?

Even in the city you cannot stick your head in the sand (or under the asphalt?) and you are not immune from climate change. Witnesses are the 15,000 mostly elderly people that died in Paris alone in the sizzling hot European summer of 2003. Or the many killed in New Orleans at the ‘hands’ of cyclone Katrina.

And if you are hot under the collar, do you think perhaps that there will be some miraculous scientific break-through so they ever-responsible ‘They’ will fix the Earth? The ultimate stem cell technology maybe that can clone a new home for us!

Seriously, for many of us it is just all too hard.

All we want is to live a life where we may raise our children to have a future.

A future of some predictability: of schooling, a job, a family, community, of achievements and an enjoyable life – on a healthy planet Earth.

Is this a fading dream, once a reasonable expectation?

Maybe, maybe not.

Our world is changing. There are great challenges ahead and it is too late to stop global warming. The Earth has changed and the processes it uses to regulate itself are adjusting themselves. And these changes will not suit human life as it is.

But you are not powerless.

Each person alone can change the world, one by one. Let me explain.

Do I say that these problems are under our control then?

Well, yes and no.

We are talking about a severely disabled world really.

And from the experience of disability we can learn how to survive and thrive!

“Come on, get real”, you say? Do I hear: “Just show me the right alternate energy sources and we’ll get out of this mess.”

Yes, we desperately do need to switch to renewable energy sources that do not make a greenhouse out of our home, the Earth. But all the technology in the world will never be enough to survive and flourish.

Renewable energy sources alone will not teach us to accept limits, unpredictability and what it is to lead a rewarding life.

How we have lived collectively, in our billions, for the last few hundred years, has got us to this point. And by changing what we do we can live through climate change as best as we might.

Even now.

It’s simple and it’s hard work. No way out of that.

Many people with severe disabilities know this. And they report the same or better life satisfaction as anyone else–under highly challenging, vulnerable circumstances.

So, we can learn to live well in a disabled world.

Regardless of what is to come you and I will be well served by the beliefs and strategies that people with disabilities use to – not just to survive – but to live well.

These are true alternate energy sources.

Those that guide us how to use what we have sustainably.

These ‘disabled people’ believe this:

* Accept that all of us are fragile and vulnerable

* The world is full of limits. We need some of these to live well

* Vulnerability and dependence are an inevitable part of a whole life

* No-one is independent, but interdependent

* Connection with others is our lifeline and our wellbeing

And they do this:

* Engage with others to build positive relationship, where you live, work and play

* Pay attention to other’s needs and that of the environment

* Take responsibility for the situation you’re in

* Care for others and the environment competently

* Be assertive and use your humour and creativity

Not all people with disabilities act in this way of course. And I’d be the last to portray
1000
people with disabilities as heroes. We’re just people – trying to get on.

You try that!

Talk to that elderly woman in your street. Offer a hand when someone needs it.

Doing such small things will connect you with others and your environment.

And do also use the ‘regular’ renewable alternate energy sources, and recycle too.

You can change your local world by acting in these ways.

And if all fails – regardless?

Well, it’s the only way to go!

Perhaps your world might be just as hot but it’ll be cooler under your collar!

renewable energy sources – Alternative Energy – Wind, Solar, Hydro and other alt energy …

Ireland which depend on imported fossil fuels for 91% at least (going by 2006 statistics) for it’s heating energy needs has initiated several grants schemes through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI for short). There are so many valuable and useful grants on offer which many of the home and buildings owners miss some of the important ones, though not intentionally.

Why grants one may ask.

These grants are there for several reasons providing a backdrop for popularizing and introducing the Irish population for sustainable energy usage in their buildings. The SEAI by this programme attempts to demonstrate superior energy technologies or provide essential support in specific fields.

The grants are in the form of financing specific tasks of the project and may be generally reimbursed in full subject to approval. From the point of view of applicability the grant schemes can be broadly divided in to Domestic and Commercial applications and then the other mega programmes.

Undoubtedly the ultimate goal of the whole scheme is to make Ireland a leading nation in the utilization of sustainable energy. With this in mind the grant schemes are categorized and implemented in four sectors. viz.

• Domestic Grants –There are three grant programmes effective in this category at the moment. These are ;

o Greener Homes Scheme (phase iii) -This is a programme providing grants for existing dwellings only. If your home has been built prior to July 2008 and you intend to replace the existing heating systems with a new and approved renewable energy system, this is one scheme for you.

o Home Energy Saving Scheme (insulation grants) – The identifier Insulation Grants is a bit of a misnomer. The grant is available for several other aspects of sustainable energy and energy conservation. For eg. Installing high efficiency condensing boilers, heating control upgrade etc.

o Warmer Homes Scheme – It is estimated Ireland has about 60,000 homes permanently and consistently subject to energy poverty and several folds of others subjected to it intermittently during the year causing untold hardships to the inhabitants and also their well being. The cause can be easily eliminated with low cost modifications to the building structure and construction and SEAI grants are available for implimenting these improvements in your home.

• Commercial Grants – There are five categories of schemes under this section and have special incentives for commercial building and enterprises in order to embark on sustainable energy programmes and other primary targets of SEAI. These categories are;

o Renewable Heat Deployment Programme – A scheme in operation since 2007, this propramme provides assistance to industrial, commercial, public and community projects of Ireland in deployment of renewable energy. Grants are available for categories Thermal Systems and Heat Pumps.

o Combined Heat and Power deployment programme – Included categories are Fossil Fuel CHPs (now closed for application) and Biomass Fuelled CHPs (only limited discretionary support available at present).

o Sustainable Energy Incubator programme – A programme designed to bridge the financial gap and foster business enterprises engaged in identified new and existing Renewable Energy development ventures.

o Public Sector Programme – A programme that provide grant funding through other programmes such as Renewable Heat Deployment programme. Meant only for the public sector projects.

o Energy Efficiency Retrofit Fund – Existing building retrofits and upgrading are grant funded with the aim of achieving a major increase in energy efficiency of public and business sector building through a specific time frame.

• Research and Development (R & D) Grants- You will find four grant schemes in this section namely;

o RERRD programme

o Micro and Small Scale Generation Pilot

o Ocean Energy Development Unit

o NER 300

• Other Grants – There are three schemes in operation under this category.viz.

o Electric Vehicles Grant Scheme

o Sustainable Energy Incubator Programme

o Intelligent Energy Europe programme

The last two categories mentioned are meant for macro scale projects except for the newly introduced Electric Vehicles Grant Scheme. The purchase of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are covered in this. The Irish government has decided to have at least 6000 BEVs and PHEVs by 2012 in order to achieve it’s goals of reduction in fossil fuel imports and emission of green house gases to the atmosphere. Accordingly up to Euro 5000 grant will be available for BEVs and up to Euro 2500 will be available for PHEVs. In addition there will be zero RVT on the former and relief of Euro 2500 for PHEVs for the same.

The grants are withdrawn or held up from time to time depending on policy decisions and the availability of funding. A good example is the necessity of BER certification before and after HES scheme and the grant available for only one of them, (which too is now reduced in value). It is important therefore to ensure a particular grant that interest you is in effect at the time of your making the application and the ground conditions are correctly understood.
